To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering, one must not love.
But, then one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is
to suffer, not to love is to suffer, to suffer is to suffer.
To be happy is to love, to be happy then, is to suffer, but,
suffering makes one unhappy, therefore, to be unhappy one
must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much
happiness. I hope you're getting this down.
--Woody Allen in Love and Death, 1975
I will not drag you along;
I will not leave you alone;
I will stand by you and have my hand
There for you to hold when you need to.
"Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is hundreds of tiny
threads which sew people together through the years."
"To fall in love is easy, even to remain in it is not difficult; our
human loneliness is cause enough. But it is a hard quest worth making
to find a comrade through whose steady presence one becomes steadily
the person one desires to be."
Anna Louise Strong
"The popular notion about marriage and love is that they are
synonymous, that they spring from the same motives, and cover the
same human needs. Like most popular notions this also rests not on
actual facts, but on superstition."
"One of the oldest human needs is having someone to wonder where
you are when you don't come home at night."
"Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with
a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but
pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain
together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness
blow the rest away."
Dina Maria Mulock Craik
"True love hurts. It always has to hurt. It must be painful to
lose someone, painful to leave them, you might have to die for them.
When people marry, they have to give up everything to love
each other. The mother who gives birth to her child suffers much.
It is the same for us in the religious life. To belong fully to God,
we have to give up everything. Only then can we truly love.
The word "love" is so misunderstood and so misused."
"When we love, we bring out the most beautiful parts of the other
person. That's real magic."
Jean Shinoda Bolen
"When passion burns within you, remember that it was given to you
for a good purpose."
"Believe in a love that is being stored up for you like an
inheritance, and have faith in this love there is a strength and
a blessing so large that you can travel as far as you wish
without having to step outside it."
